HISTORY

There are many reports about the origin of the pretzel loop, as well as the origin of the name. Most of them agree that they have religious origins and / or Christian origins, which were invented by monks. According to the History of Science and Technology, by Bryan Bunch and Alexander Hellemans in 610 AD "... an Italian monk invents pretzels as a reward for children who learned their prayers. He called the strips of cooked pasta, to remember arms crossed over his chest, pretiola ("little reward"). "

Another source finds the invention in a monastery in southern France. The pretzel loop may also have evolved from a ring of Greek bread that was served in monasteries for the Last Supper of 1000 years ago. In Germany, there are stories that the pretzels were desperate invention of a bakery. In 1905 Meyers Konversationslexikon of the origin of the suspects pretzels come from a ban on pagan traditions bakery in the form of wheels ddo sun in the Synod of Estinn in the year 743. The pretzel may have arisen as a substitute. The German name "Brezel" may have been derived from Latin: bracellus (a medieval term for "bracelet"), or bracchiola ("small arms").

The pretzel has been used as an emblem of bakers in areas of southern Germany, at least since the 12th century. The illustration in Hortus deliciarum of German Alsace region (now France) may contain the earliest description of a pretzel.

An illustration of the 12th century in Alsace Deliciarum Hortus which may be the first to represent a pretzel, this shows a banquet with Queen Esther and King Ahasuerus

Within the Catholic church, the pretzels were considered with meaning rewired its two ingredients and shape.
