"That we all lived happily eve of the second and all fared well,"

Christmas on earth Lowicz was celebrated with great solemnity. Coincides with the winter solstice, so for people closely associated with cultivation is a very important holiday. In the culture of Christian rites Lowicz beautifully intertwined with pagan, many of them unfortunately are no longer cultivated.
Rite begins on Christmas Eve and lasted until Epiphany. It was a special time of supernatural forces, rich in omens and predictions, I beg the future, trying to secure a successful and generous year.
"What a Christmas all year round" - They used to say. This belief has survived to this day. Had to get up early in the morning and wash in the river or wells throughout the year to be a beautiful and healthy. Throughout the day, it was necessary to be cheerful, smiling, pleasant and polite. Quarrels and strife were excluded - wrong wróżyły for the future. Throughout the day, supper was prepared and decorated the room, putting on the walls and ceiling beams made during the year, especially for the occasion, cut and bouquets of flowers and spiders. (For interior cabin Lowicz return in the future). The host brought from the forest of juniper or pine branches and placed them on the altar, or hung from the ceiling above the table, decorate them with chains of colored paper and candy. It was a symbol of life and had to be kept at home until the Epiphany, and then burn (absolutely not throw). White cloth covered the table, and he placed in the hay. Hay was placed on the wafer. In the corner of the room - or under the table - placed bundle of straw. When the first star to appear sat down for Christmas Eve dinner. Feast of Christmas was all connected, remembered so absent and recently deceased members family. Mentioned them, and always at the table was left an empty space. It was believed that the spirit of a deceased person attending the Christmas Eve.
Supper began with a sharing of the wafer. In addition to white wafers, on the table were colored wafers, intended for animals. Zanoszone them to the barn after dinner, it did protect animals against disease and keep them in the new year in good health. While sharing the wafer pronounced wishes: "we all lived happily eve of the second and all fared well." Supper was always fasting, and food had to be nieparzyście, best nine. Administered: herrings with potatoes or bread, cabbage, peas and mushrooms and oil, pasta "ears", compote of dried fruits (apples, plums, pears), donuts fried in oil and tea. In wealthy households served frequented red borsch, dumplings cheese, and rice in a densely. Fried fish was one of the exceptions and appeared only in those villages where he was a pond or river.
The evening was spent at home, singing carols and a pleasant time of fortune:
Longevity is measured by pulling the blade of hay from under the tablecloth during Christmas Eve dinner - the longer the better. Young women
gustowały in fortune-telling of her arranged marriage.
Many predictions relate well to the expected yield: the starry sky - will endure a lot of chicken eggs, the cloudy sky - a milk cow or years will give a lot of milk, soot on the trees - a good harvest in the orchards, while grains with hay crumbled located on the table - good harvest in the field. The same was the role of sheaf of straw brought on the eve of the Chamber and dumplings "ears" are down to supper. The longer the greater the ears of grain.
From Christmas to Epiphany weather predicted through the next twelve days, as many years to months. This meant that what the weather will be like next year. To this day every year, my dad remembers this habit and try to predict the weather for the next month 
At the end of the evening the older teenagers and adults went to midnight mass celebration of the church.

Christmas Day was celebrated with great solemnity and family. Was spent at home, do not visit anyone and did not accept visitors. After the morning Mass, or after all, had brought this day holy water holy host of the house, all household members, and bypass the farm and orchard.
rest of the water poured into the wells, "to bugs in the water was not." This coincidence was to protect your household from misfortune and bring blessings.

Second Christmas Day or St. Valentine's Day. Stephen
was spent very happily. On this day, carolers began their journey in the village, which lasted until Candlemas (February 2). The church was brought into the consecration oats, grain which showered each other after worship. This was done commemorates the stoning of St. Stephen and according to folk tales it was a magical agent, designed to ensure the success, wealth, beauty and success.
In some parishes, the host of returning to the dedicated oat walked straight onto the field and not looking back or around every few steps to the ground by throwing a few grains of oats, said: "run away with the dastardly czorcie thistle, because St. Stephen goes with oats" - was to ensure good crops and weeds Malo.
In all the villages that day godzono (ie employed), farmhands and maidens to help at home. Farm hands that day in the village were the most important, did not work, they could walk a wide path, the hosts stood firm to them from the road. Work in the new year received a pledge. The place of the contracts was a farmhand or a home owner who needed a farmhand to work. In the afternoon in the village was "music", which primarily played with farm hands.

At the end of a fragment of appearing on the site Gwary Polish:
adults in the New Year the boys walked around the village early in the morning and - the slamming of the whips uplecionych of flax - filed requests. The beautiful upleciony was the bat, the sound seemed more beautiful. New Year Wishes
filed a carol singers (ages 10 to 15 years old) walking around the countryside with a star (a mobile made of cardboard and glued on colored, glansowanymi papers), crib (with the scene of the birth of Jesus, or kind of puppet theater) and "Herody" who went on carolling from December 26 (St. Stephen), until February 2 (Candlemas).
"Herody" is a presentation made by the boys over the age of 16 years, who themselves had prepared myself clothes and dressed as a centurion, Herod, Angel, Devil, Death, two or four knights and Florek. The boys were eagerly welcomed in homes and gratified by money and a variety of products such as eggs, sausage, etc.

Pain During Last Drops Of Urine

To play may Anyone who sits down to the instrument and gives it some time - the result will be better or worse. The trick is to revive this instrument, a great achievement - to show his personality, give the identity. However, only the master has the authority for whose use can make us believe beyond any doubt that this piece of wood, metal, whatever - has a soul.

Play and playing the deception, deceive constantly. Let not realize we cling to the belief that it is child's play. I just let my own failures, trials, annoyances we will spell out how far we are from the truth.

Each instrument has a soul, the musician - not everyone. Callous musicians are in their best gusts, as well designed, well- oiled machine, which does not know how to laugh, cry, or pissed off to the whole goddamn world. Human relationship with the instrument consists of interpenetration, reconciling the two worlds. A man can move, awaken the dormant soul of the instrument - must, however, for this purpose to know his language.

Patriae Commodis Serviens ie coats Lowicz

HERB OF

Lowicz Coat of Arms (called Little Herb) presents in a blue field, two pelicans with silver legs and beaks of gold, returned to their backs. Between them is a green tree of life.
image of the pelican has often been used in heraldry as the themes of stamps, crests and coats of arms of ancestral towns, has its roots in sacred art, which symbolized the sacrifice of Jesus. Tree of life according to Biblical tradition, obdarzało immortality to anyone who tasted the fruit. Grew in the middle Eden, next to the tree of knowledge from which Adam and Eve broke the fruit. God did not want to eat the fruit of another tree and became immortal, and banished them from Raju.Drzewo life was present in a number of sacred art. The cross was presented not as a tree of shame, and as the heavenly tree of life, because it springs life eternal.
If we take into account Łowicz history and its close ties with the church, it seems an obvious choice of such themes in the emblem of the city.

Herb Great Cities Lowicz coat of arms shows the coat of arms with the emblem of the City of Little Herb Lowicz called, crowned the prince's miter, held by the figures of two angels. At the bottom there is a ribbon with the motto reads: Patriae Commodis Serviens (You homeland useful).

remember from my childhood, which coincided with the end of the communist regime, arms Lowicz in a slightly different issue. Loom me Pelicans drinking the blood from his own breast, on a red field. I am not able at this time post pictures of the coat, I do not remember exactly its appearance, no way I can also delve into at this moment in the quest, and do not want to post something that would not be consistent with the historical truth. Anyway - it would unnecessarily blurred the picture. I will try to post information about this in another note.

HERB CITIES

In Polish heraldry coat of arms is known to Pelikan, showing a red box, silver bird feeding young blood.
refers to the coat of arms municipality Lowicz, showing silver in the blue box, a pelican with a beak and feet on the golden ribbon river. Coat of arms established in June 2009.

HERB DISTRICT

This herb undoubtedly aroused the strongest emotions on the ground Lowicz. It was designed in 2002, against all rules of heraldry. Official information from the county Lowicz says:
9 October 2002. Resolution No. XLV/274/2002 Lowicz District Council was established by a coat of arms, flags (official and territorial) and the seal of the District Lowicz Lowicz Starosta. Coat - the coat of arms for the District of Lowicz shield-cut Late Gothic as a canvas for the image of the coat of arms. Shield divided into three fields, with the bottom one red, the bottom shield wider, slightly upward kończato occurring. In the red box, white eagle with a golden beak, with golden legs with golden claws and a golden ring on the tail. The second field, upper-yellow siding from the right, toward the center of the disc in the narrow strip pole in the colors green, white and red. The third box, top-yellow, from the left side track, where the disc toward the center lanes narrow into a pillar in the colors blue, white and red. The two upper boxes are mutually mirror images of their distribution in the construction of pole strips, and almost in the colors, except for the colors green and blue - mutually contradictory. Crest pattern Lowicz District No. 1 is annexed to Resolution No. XLV/274/2002 Lowicz District Council on 9 October 2002. The author of the coat is a visual artist Michelle Marciniak, MA-Kożuchowska

After passing the county arms in the press, in scientific and political debate raged about its correctness. Heraldry is after all a huge field and every symbol, every color has its significance, and here we go ... a flower. Built probably in the mind principle that the "dark people buy everything." I remember with flushed face, I read another news, I kept my fingers crossed, hoping that common sense will prevail. Unfortunately ... won dud. Łowicka Star

On a blog dedicated to Łowiczowi can not fail to mention this of which is known Lowicz throughout the country. No, this is not folklore. I am thinking of Lowicz JAM:) Many times after this when I informed the caller that
come from Lowicz heard "and is where the jams."
currently produces jams Agros Nova. A few words about the manufacturer:
Łowicz processing plant in operation since 1965. This year was born the brand name ŁOWICZ - today one of the most famous Polish food brands. The company was named The Fruit and Vegetable Industry ŁOWICZ, employed 340 people
In December 1990 the company was in Agros Holding SA, a company Agros ZPOW Lowicz.
In subsequent years, it underwent the adaptation to the requirements of the free market. Invested in new lines and repair facilities. The launch of the brand Fortuna. In March 2000 the group was spun off Agros Holding company Agros Fortuna Sp. Ltd., responsible for the processing industry of fruits and vegetables. Its members have also come out Lowicz processing plants in Bialystok and Tarczyn. Agros Fortuna Lowicz brand became a leader of jams and tomato, and the second largest producer of juices, drinks and nectars (brands such as Fortuna, Karotka, Tarczyn). January 16 Agros Fortuna. acquired by Polish Enterprise Fund, managed by Enterprise Investors.
At this point, the process of joining Agros Fortuna Sp. with Sonda SA (which was also owned by Enterprise Investors), completed on 29 December 2003, Agros Nova Sp. z oo plant in Lowicz Today is one of three plants belonging to the company and the brand Lowicz one of six strategic brands in its portfolio.
More Manufacturer: www.agrosnova.pl / wszystko_o_nas / index.html

Only official information from each other I can add that image are inseparable summer queues of lorries filled with fruits and vegetables, plant gate facing the street insurgents. And the smell of tomatoes floating around in this part of town ... ehhh ... carefree ...

plant produces are of course many other products, but today I want to focus only on the jam:)
Well: There are several flavors of jam, however, is probably the most popular strawberry jam, who won first prize and the title in the competition "Rarity" 2004. Jury of this contest were not professionals, but "ordinary bread eaters." I am eating a plum and porzeczkowymi.
In addition, the colored Jams are in your account such awards as: "Good for Polish", "Promotional Emblem Now Poland", "Gold Medal Polagra '94", "The most interesting food product of the year" and many others.
Personally, I do not eat the other jams and it is not only an expression of local patriotism:)
Łowicz for me are simply unbeatable: you are free to find a whole piece of fruit, are low-sugar, no preservatives and have a natural taste of fruit. Ideally suited as an additive to breads, waffles, pastries, pancakes.
are delicious even when eats with a spoon it straight from the jar or as an additive to tea (other mdlące sometimes):)

Ulcers In Mouth, Sore Throat, Fever

From the series: Łowicz Biographies - 1

Joseph Chełmoński

Polish painter of realism. Born on 07.11.1849 in a village near towicz Sides, a family of low nobility. He grew up in an atmosphere of respect for cultural values, which took care of his mother and father, grandfather and talented artist.

In latach1862-1865 Chełmoński attended the School District of the General Łowicz. Already in high school he thought seriously about it, to devote himself to malarstwu.W years 1867-1871 he studied at the Private School Gerson in Warsaw, and later at the Warsaw School of Drawing.

After his departure from Warsaw, a painter lived for two years in Munich, then moved to Paris. The beginnings were difficult - the artist struggled with poverty, after some time, however, his paintings have gained recognition. The French, Americans paid over ten thousand francs for one's image. Also in Paris, of paintings, "Night in the Ukraine" and "Before Inn ".

Chełmońskiego criticized in Poland mainly for his painting" Indian Summer ". These same images, which in Poland did not want to accept the exhibition, the international exhibitions have received the highest honors.

Chełmoński In Paris he lived lavishly, strangely dressed and smartly, and presented his paintings over and over again, with the hooves of horses rushing by huge snow, hunting, wolf attacks, fields, pastures, meadows, among the blizzard of snow and fog. But he knew that, despite excellent visual memory begins to repeat itself and that his paintings away from the earth, he wanted to represent, are getting worse. In 1887 he decided to return to the Polish. He settled in Grodzisk Mazowiecki near Kuklówce
and devoted himself to painting from nature his beloved Mazowsza.Wyjeżdżał there for a short time only to Podolia, Polesie, Ukraine. My favorite picture is:

reminds me of patriotism and raises some dormant strings. Today
Chełmoński has Łowicz street of his name and the school - the oldest school in town, but I will write about him on another occasion. There are also organized Rallies by PTTK Chelmonski Trail, leading through the village associated with the artist.
You can even get them a badge. J. Chełmońskiego: http://www.pttk.pl/pttk/przepisy/index.php?co=ro_orpzc

Market

I guess in every Polish city is located in the bazaar, where you can stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables, cheap clothes or shoes , eggs
and much, much flowers.
Targowica Lowicz is exactly the same commercial yard, with one caveat: I've never met a
specifying it as the bazaar. Famous people I Lowicz as one man, always say "go to market" and buy nails, "there next to the market." Yes yes, next Targowice was famous in Lowicz
nail shop and the hardware. I loved to go there and look at the bowls full of nails, screws or similar
all sorts of goods which was bought by kilograms.
Market is located in the center of the city - always * was at the intersection of Starzyńskiego
and Sikorski. In the previous system of these streets bear the names: at the time it was the corner on July 22
and Water.

In Lovich, in accordance with grated custom, there are two fairs dniw week - Tuesday and Friday, although slowly, and it is changing - for several years as trade flourishes on Saturday mornings. In these days of market traders appear to neighborhoods further and closer, who in his tender to the proverbial "soap and a bit of everything: vegetables, fruits, clothes, shoes, haberdashery, kitchen appliances, furniture, antiques.
My early childhood coincided with the final year communist regime. This was a period when the shops were gray and empty, and targowica nęciła colorful flecks of vegetables and fruit, the scent of flowers i. .. Kögl-I could:) That was the tradition - after returning from shopping in the market and przytachaniu Mendel fresh eggs, yolks
shooting followed with sugar and cocoa or coffee - depending on your mood and resource grandma drinks cans with loose:) Today salmonella is so widespread that they do not dare to think Kogel-mogel on, even with eggs from przekupek ...

With memories of Targowice best remember my grandmother with me, reaching some 20 years ago to market
and always questioning, "after which the eggs." Long time no longer hear that someone in this way, he inquired about the price:) Now, prices on the labels are written, in black and white like cows at the border:)
Merchants and still are the same: looking among them, one can see both the old woman's eggs from hens trading of backstairs farm or home-grown flowers, as well as more "professional" traders selling eggs from the chicken farms, vegetables and fruits from podłowickich fields and orchards. In addition to the stalls, however, was built pavilions, stalls erected in accordance with the standards sanepidu ... This changes the image of a little old Targowice, even in such a place can not stop the passage of time:)
Eh, I conclude for I groaned, and this note looks look very different than she had. And to take a photo przekupniom dared not - I was afraid to risk losing the camera, sometimes a bit impulsive Księżacy ;-)

Finally - a fragment of the current Targowice:

Indian Women Showing Her Boobs

Łowicz Markets

In I mentioned earlier Lowicz scrap market, so now a few words about them:

OLD TOWN SQUARE - from 1917 to the age of 90 th century, also known as Thaddeus Kosciuszko Square. He was for many centuries functions trade. Since the Middle Ages took place at the weekly market (Fridays), and annual fairs. The measure of the market occupied a brick Gothic Old Town Hall, which after the construction of the old town hall nowomiejskiego lost importance and was transformed into a composition soli.Został demolished in 1830.
The Old Market Square is the Town Hall (1828) (which is still the seat of the city) Cathedral Basilica church. Blessed Virgin Mary statue "Sons Łowicz Land" (1927) in honor of the fallen in the struggle for freedom; pomisjonarski building that now is the colored museum, Bishop's Palace, the baroque and Renaissance canon, and historic buildings.
After World War II in the middle of the Old Market stood a monument to Polish-Soviet friendship, which was demolished in 1991. I remember fondly the obelisk. Was erected on a big pedestal, which is consisted of the stairs - scary fun for children, but adults did not like it - today was the only stain on the pavement blocks ...

NEW MARKET - let me quote the official information from the Municipal Office
in Lowicz:
"One of the three preserved in their original form triangular markets in Europe (next
Bonn and Paris). The market has Late Gothic town hall with a five-tower erected in 1539, Nearly a hundred years later the tower collapsed irretrievably destroying the building. According to legend, a catastrophe would be due to burning at the stake women accused of witchcraft.

Over the centuries the square served as town market, and the streets leading away from his base were in the form of fair market stalls (street Zduńska, Bielawska and Piotrkowska - now Stanislavski), and butchers' shambles (Nowomiejska Street - currently Goat). Especially noteworthy are brick houses of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries In 1939 the southern frontage of the market has destroyed by the war.

During the Nazi occupation of New Market was included into the Jewish Ghetto (1940-1941). After 1945, children served as a town market - the main shopping square Lowicz. In the 50s of the twentieth century has been rehabilitated and transformed it into an urban park. Conducted in the 90's, the excavations led to the degradation of the market (closed down the fountain, was demolished surface and passageways)
Today the market is refurbished, is again at the fountain, and although the old town hall has been demolished several centuries is still "exists" - place which once were its foundations have been marked with a different color of paving blocks. Around the fountain in the summer evenings, young people gather, thriving social life:)
photo shows New Market before the renovation.

... Targowica market is the third city:), which lives its own rhythm, but with her on another occasion ...

Letter To New Home Owners

Well siup:) Here we go.
Once, a resident of Lowicz visiting the first time in his life, depicting the charm, tranquility and atmosphere of the city, and the beauty of his buildings - and how;) - Łowiczanek. Against the wall asserted that he liked Lowicz significantly, and this opinion does not follow from a desire to please his favorite Łowiczance:)

entrusted his opinion and I made an attempt to look at familiar to me from inside the city, through the eyes of an outsider. Of course it is not easy, If you lived through in that city all his life so far. Not helped in this change of address in Lodz, or visit Łowicz the occasion of "łikendowych", after all, it is still my city and the question "where are you from?" invariably answer "from Lowicz.
Actually, however, something changed: a move to Lodz allowed better appreciate the charm of his hometown - to discover its benefits, without losing sight of its shortcomings.

Much has been written about Lovich in the press, in books, on the Internet. Anyway I decided to make available online a bit more space for my Town and next to what is usually said about him - that old, that the Bull of Gniezno, the bishops, that the Swedes that jams, milk and striped łowiczanki - try to show what the guide books can not be found. This is you
mishmash of history, culture, daily life and curiosities. We'll see what comes up ...

Łodzianinowi thanks for the idea:)
